June 10, 2008, While trying to constantly promote the area sometimes its appropriate to report bad news too. Such is the case with the regional flooding that is occuring as a result of the extremely heavy rains that didn't even fall in our area but north of us in a wide belt across the state west to east. But due to our rivers all draining south and west here it is. We are having record high crests by about 2 feet or so with some levee breaks but fortunately no lives lost or people injured to our knowledge as several towns have been evacuated (but not Bicknell). It is making it extremely hard on our farmers trying to get crops planted and tended to with an already late planting time and now another delay of weeks to plant or replant flooded fields. Many thanks to our local fire departments as well as the National Guard troops and the local inmate work force and many volunteers who helped evacuate and fill and place sandbags. More on this story in a few days. Ron Ackman |

Bicknell Farmers Market 5-31-08, well the 'Strawberry Fest' today (31st) was a huge success selling out of strawberry shortcake, hot dogs, soda and coffee. It appears the 'Strawberry Fest' will be repeated again next Saturday June 7th. For some reason our vendors were down to two although if somebody had brought strawberries they likely could have sold out. The folks with the pies sold out again for the third week in a row. A vendor with garage sale items was here and I know he had at least some sales. We really need produce and crafts. Fact is more vendors are needed, please call first for confirmation and details, 735-4636 or 735-2502. No charge. The market is sponsored by the Bicknell Good Start Committee. To help with the Good Start Committee you can volunteer to help with the markets and attend the Good Start meetings on the fourth Monday of each month at 5:30 pm at the Bicknell Fire Station. Bicknell Farmers Market 5-24-08 Five vendors today supplied everything from lawn mowers to pies to electronics to cut glass dishes to bird houses and more. Next Saturday expect about the same except for more vendors and with produce coming on (strawberries) a strawberry festival will be held with strawberry shortcake and whipped cream along with hot dogs, soda and coffee. Hours are scheduled from 8 to noon but some booths may be set up earlier. Bicknell Good Start sponsors the market. From Ron Ackman |

The 7th annual Janet Davis Memorial Scrabble Tournament benefiting heart, kidney or diabetes charities will be held on Sunday April 13 at 2 pm at the Bicknell Bed & Breakfast, 120 W. 3rd in Bicknell. Janet was an avid scrabble player even though she was severely disabled and passed away in 2000 from all 3 disabilities mentioned. Local business people are always generous in donating something for prizes and contestants make cash donations for entry into the tournament. There are always so many prizes that contestants always get more than one prize. Outside cash donations for the charities are accepted also. Usually between $100 and $200 is raised and this year we are hoping for more. If you like to play scrabble make plans to participate April 13th. |

The Mardi Gras Celebration in Vincennes Saturday night was a great time for all! The Cajun music was fantastic and J.C. Jones from Nashville TN did a very good job of teaching us some Cajun dance steps that actually were used a lot during the concert. We were well represented with Ruthie, Charlie, Ann, Diana, Jack and myself. Our friends Ken and Pat Neighbors were crowned King and Queen by virtue of finding the trinket in the piece of cake that Pat received. They also will get a 3 day vacation to the New Orleans Mardi Gras. BTW we had flyers sitting out for our Contra Dance Group and there was interest expressed. Also we do dance to Cajun music some at our dances. |
